NSW; Mourners gather for police officers funeral

Hundreds of mourners have gathered at Newcastle's Christchurch Cathedral to farewellNew South Wales Police officer CHRIS THORNTON, who died in a suspicious car accident earlierthis month.

Senior Constable THORNTON, a 35-year-old Brisbane Water highway patrol officer, diedon April 13 when his marked car hit a power pole in Woy Woy on the Central Coast.

At the time, police said there was evidence another car was involved in the crash.

More than 600 people, many of them colleagues of the popular Senior Constable, areexpected to attend the full police funeral at 11 am (AEST) today.

Acting Police Commissioner KEN MORONEY is to deliver the valedictory speech, whileretired police officer and long-time family friend JOHN KINNEY will give the eulogy.

Police Minister MICHAEL COSTA has also indicated he will attend the service.

Senior Constable THORNTON'S de facto wife SARAH MATTHEWS and his parents BARRY andFREADA THORNTON are among the principal mourners.

LEONARD ALLAN ROWLEY, 56, has appeared in Gosford Magistrates Court over the crash
