NSW: Small's appointment only temporary: ICAC
The surprise appointment of former NSW assistant police commissioner CLIVE SMALL to
the Independent Commission Against Corruption will be only temporary, lasting just one
year.
Commissioner IRENE MOSS has defended her decision to bypass conventional process and
directly assign Mr SMALL to the role of strategic operations director of the watchdog,
heading its investigations unit.
The 40-year police veteran, who until last month was working on crime prevention in
the Premier's Department, is expected to take up the post within weeks.
He will replace MICHAEL OUTRAM, who'll become director of national operations at the
Australian Crime Commission.
Ms MOSS employed a clause in ICAC's recruitment guidelines, enabling her to directly
appoint an employee without publicly advertising the position on the proviso that that
appointment is temporary.
She says the fact that she is stepping down in November means it's appropriate to give
the new commissioner a say in who fills the permanent position.
The government will begin advertising for the new commissioner's position tomorrow.
